Orgar's around the World

About Our Family Research

The Orgar, Orger, Augar, Auger and other similar names all seem to originate around the Norfolk, Suffolk or Kent areas. Most Orgars & Orgers have been traced back to the 16-17 hundreds in the Hadham area of Hertfordshire.

It is beleived that these all originated from one family. There are plenty of instances where the names have been mispelt or misread by clerics, recorders and researchers and you have Brothers and Sisters spelling the Surname differently, with subsequent generations falling into what seems like new Family groups.

There is also Earl Orgar (Ordgar, Orgard) of Devon (around 960 AD) whose Daughter Elfrida married The King,Edgar The Peaceful and who then allegedly killed the Kings son by his previous marriage to put her own son on the throne.

The Parish of Orgarswick in the Romney Marshes of Kent first resistered around 1100 AD with the diocese of Canterbury. The only thoughts on this are that either the land owner or priest that errected the church was called Orgar.

Then there is the Registration district of St Martin Orgar in London which lasted for around 800 years. How did the Church and district become so named. Lots of theories but very little evidence. And did The Rhyme Orange and Lemons, grow up around the church of St Martin Orgar and St Clements which were united after the Great fire of London where the church of St Martin Orgar in Cannon Street was mostly destroyed. The Main Church was finally demolished in 1829, but the tower was rebuilt and still exists today, although as an office and not a place of worship.

If only we could bring some of this together, maybe somebody can supply some enlightening tit bits or theories.

In more recent years 1900's onwards there are two branches of the family that have become established in Canada/USA. There is also now a family in Australia. These are the confirmed branches of the Orgar family that we have found. If you feel that you are missing from our little history please let us know and we'll be happy to add you in.
